UNIMI

The Computer Science Department of the University of Milan ("Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Informazione", DSI) offers curricula in Computer Science, Digital Communication, Telecommunications, issuing degrees at the first, second and doctoral levels. The current number of students enrolled at the DSI is about 4,000. The faculty of the DSI comprises about 7 full professors, 8 associate professors, 13 assistant professors, and 10 post-docs. The technical and administrative staff comprises about 20 people. The DSI is active in most areas of computer science, theoretical as well as experimental and applied. In particular, research is active in the fields of computational intelligence and soft computing, telecommunications and social networks, random processes and mobility models, computer graphics and image processing, robotics and domotic systems. The host institution is used to dealing with international research programs. In particular we cite the EC TMR project PHYSTA (Principled hybrid Systems, Theory and Applications) (PHYSTA Project, 1998) 1998-2000 ,the EC FP5 project ORESTEIA (Modular Hybrid Artefacts with Adaptive Functionality) (Oresteia Project, 2001) 2001-2003, EC FP7-ICT REWIRE (Rehabilitative Wayout In Responsive home Environments) (REWIRE Project, 2011) 2011-2014, Network of Eccellence Pascal (now Pascal 2) (PASCAL 2 , 2010), since 2005. Main tasks in the project. The competence of UNIMI in this project is mainly involved in the design of the overall architecture of the service infrastructure. UNIMI will cover also strict technical aspects concerning the actual development of the architecture ranging from the development of several network modules, web-services and social network both from the structural and algorithmic point of view. UNIMI will cover also various aspects connected with the computational intelligence of the platform, with special regards to the fuzzy rule system and the collection of statistics from users and machineries. UNIMI will lead WP01 and will be heavily involved in WP03, WP05 and WP06, while participating in WP04 and WP08. Furthermore, UNIMI will act as project coordinator, in charge of both administrative and technological management of the project, thus leading WP09 and WP10. Previous experience relevant to those tasks. International cooperation led UNIMI to the development of specific competences in three fields:

1. Functionality emergence from the cooperation of a set of low power processors.
2. Opportunistic networks.
3. Granular computing methodology to process imprecise and partial data.
4. Unification of the traditional home automation with the semantic web in order to create a web based RESTful protocol.
5. Development of mobile applications to control of the domotic appliances.
6. Development of simulated house appliances and a prototype of communication protocol to talk with and control them.

Short profile of key persons

Bruno APOLLONI. He is full professor in Computer Science at the University of Milan, Italy. His main research interests are in the frontier area between probability and mathematical statistics and computer science, with special regard to pattern recognition and multivariate data analysis, probabilistic analysis of algorithms, subsymbolic and symbolic learning processes, mobility models, domotic systems. He has published more than 150 papers in international journals and proceedings of international congresses. Prof. Apolloni is head of the Neural Networks Research Laboratory (LAREN, http://laren.dsi.unimi.it) of the department of Computer Science of the University of Milan and board member of the EuropeanNeural Network Society (ENNS, http://www.e-nns.org/) and of the Italian Society for Neural Networks (SIREN, http://siren.dsi.unimi.it). He is a member of the editorial board of the journals Neural Networks, Neurocomputing and International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems. He is Scientific Leader in national and international research projects.

Simone Bassis is an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Milano, Italy. His main research activities concern the inference of spatial and temporal processes, ranging from linear and nonlinear statistical regression methodologies to techniques of fractal processes identification, passing through the analysis and synthesis of both population and neuronal evolutionary dynamics. Recently he is engaged in statistical modeling in ad hoc opportunistic networks. He published around 15 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Dario Malchiodi. He is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department, University of Milano, Italy. He is currently teaching in the Laboratory of Computer Programming and Operational Systems classes. His research activities concern the treatment of uncertain information and related aspects of mathematical statistics and artificial intelligence, including applications to machine learning, population dynamics, and pervasive computing. He has published around 30 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Cristina DE FRANCO. She has a university degree in Political Sciences and an MD in national and European funding programs. She is a member of the project management team within UNIMI, where she takes part in the administrative and financial coordination of EU funding projects. She has eleven years of experience in managing EU funded project, mainly FP projects (FP5, FP6, FP7), and promoting international technology transfer, started inside European Commission MEDIA Innovation Relay Centre, where she worked for five years.
